Earlier this month, the central government approved two vaccines against COVID-19 for emergency use. One of them was Covishield, the Indian variant of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government of India has also signed a contract with Serum Institute of India for the supply of 11 million doses of Covishield. Serum Institute has already created a stock of over 50 million dosages of the Covishield and intends to produce up to 100 million dosages per month by March next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to media reports, the company is expected to sign a deal with Gavi-COVAX to supply over 400 million additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines. Gavi is a public-private global<\/a> health partnership to increase access to immunisation in poor countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through its Strategic Investment Fund, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide at-risk funding of a further US$150 million to Gavi, bringing the total funding provided through this collaboration to US$300 million. This funding will be utilized to support the Serum Institute of India to manufacture potential vaccine candidates, and for future procurement of vaccines for low- and middle-income countries via Gavi’s COVAX AMC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
