Indian stock market timings – BSE and NSE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Indian stock markets are open<\/strong> five days a week from Monday to Friday <\/strong>and closed Saturdays and Sundays as well as holidays declared by the exchanges in advance. This year there are 17 holidays<\/strong> on which stock markets will remain closed of which five holidays are falling on Saturdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stock market timings in the equities segment can be briefly classified into 3 different categories.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Category I of stock market timings – Pre-open session<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the pre-open session order entry and order modifications start at 9.00 AM and close at 09:08 AM with random closure in the last one minute. Once the Pre-open order entry closes the pre-open order matching starts immediately and closes at 09:15 AM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Category II of stock market timings – Regular trading session<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the regular trading session, markets are open for normal trading between 09:15 AM to 3:30 PM.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Category III of stock market timings – The closing session<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The closing session is held between 15.40 hrs and 16.00 hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing price calculations are done in 10 minutes between 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM.<\/strong> Depending on the weighted average of prices between 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM, the closing price of a stock is calculated. In the case of indices such as the NSE Nifty<\/a> and BSE Sensex<\/a>, the closing prices are calculated based on the weighted average of the constituent stocks between 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post-close session is conducted for 20 minutes between 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM, where one can place orders to buy or sell at the closing price. The trade will be confirmed at the closing price in case buyers or sellers are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timings for Block Deal Sessions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the three mentioned categories, the Indian stock market has dedicated periods for block deals. NSE has two slots for block deals – the morning block deal window operates between 08:45 AM to 09:00 AM, and the afternoon block deal window operates between 02:05 PM to 2:20 PM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Block deals on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are accepted and carried out only during the initial 35 minutes between 09:15 AM and 9:50 AM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that the pre-open session and the post-close session of stock market timings are available only in the cash segment. There is no such option available in the future & options segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhurat trading<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of Diwali\/Laxmi Pujan, exchanges conduct a special trading session known as Muharat Trading<\/a>. As per traditional belief and customs, the special one-hour trading session is considered auspicious for investments<\/a> and also marks the beginning of the Hindu accounting year, known as Samvat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the above-mentioned hours, exchanges may also extend, advance, or reduce trading hours when deemed necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I buy shares after 3:30 pm?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes, you can order to buy shares from 3:30 pm to 3:40 pm. But you can place the order at the closing price only. After that, the exchange will execute your order based on the availability of buyers and sellers.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Can I buy shares at 9 am?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n
\n\n

Yes, you can place a buy order as soon as the markets open at 9:00 am. But the execution happens at 9:15 pm as orders accepting and matching take place during the first 15 minutes, also called a pre-open session.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
