Every great brand begins with a simple idea. For TVS Motor Company, that idea was to make mobility more accessible, dependable and relevant to everyday life. Over the decades, the company has transformed this purpose into a business spanning motorcycles, scooters, electric vehicles and international markets. Its journey reflects how an Indian manufacturer can build consumer trust, embrace changing aspirations and compete on a global stage.

In FY 2025-26, TVS Motor Company reported record revenue of ₹47,270 crore, a 30% increase over the previous financial year. It sold approximately 5.89 million two-wheelers and three-wheelers, marking 24% year-on-year growth. The company’s momentum continued into FY 2026-27. In the first quarter, it recorded revenue of ₹13,896 crore, up 38% year-on-year, while profit after tax increased 51% to ₹1,174 crore. These numbers represent more than financial growth. They tell the story of a company that has continually adapted to how people live, work and travel.

From a Family Business to a Mobility Brand

TVS Motor Company’s roots lie in the wider TVS Group, founded by T. V. Sundram Iyengar in 1911. The group’s emphasis on reliability, service and customer relationships helped establish a foundation for its automotive ambitions.

The company’s dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing journey took shape in 1978, when its manufacturing operations began at Hosur, Tamil Nadu. This marked an important step towards building a homegrown mobility business capable of serving India’s expanding transportation needs.

For Indian households, a two-wheeler was rarely just a vehicle. It represented independence, access to employment, easier commutes and the freedom to manage everyday responsibilities. TVS built its presence by addressing these practical needs while gradually expanding into performance-oriented and premium segments.

By 2026, this long-term approach had helped TVS Motor strengthen its position among the world’s leading two-wheeler manufacturers. Its ability to combine large-scale manufacturing with product innovation has become an important part of its competitive identity.

Growth Through Innovation and Consumer Connection

As India’s two-wheeler market evolved, TVS expanded its portfolio to reach different customer groups. Its motorcycles and scooters served commuters seeking everyday convenience, while its performance-focused products appealed to younger riders looking for speed, design and individuality.

The TVS Apache family became an important part of this transformation. By connecting its performance motorcycles with racing-inspired engineering and motorsport culture, the company developed a stronger identity among enthusiasts. The Apache brand helped position TVS beyond basic transportation, associating it with aspiration, technology and riding experiences.

Its scooter portfolio followed a complementary strategy. Models such as the Jupiter and NTORQ addressed different combinations of practicality, comfort, style and performance. Rather than relying on a single bestselling product, TVS developed a portfolio that could respond to varied budgets, preferences and stages of life.

Electric mobility has added another growth driver. The TVS iQube has helped the company establish a presence in the electric scooter segment, appealing to customers interested in lower-emission urban transportation and modern features. In the first quarter of FY 2026-27, TVS Motor’s two-wheeler electric vehicle sales increased 86% year-on-year to 129,940 units.

This product-led marketing strategy helped strengthen consumer connection. Motorsport associations, product launches, dealership experiences and after-sales service reinforced the brand’s promise of combining engineering with everyday usability.

Navigating Challenges and Changing Market Expectations

TVS’s growth has not been simply a matter of selling more vehicles. The two-wheeler industry faces intense competition, changing customer expectations, regulatory requirements, fluctuating input costs and economic uncertainty.

The company has had to balance affordability with product quality, operational efficiency and investment in new technology. It has also needed to respond to a generation of consumers increasingly interested in connectivity, design, fuel efficiency and sustainable transportation.

One significant strategic shift has been its move towards premiumisation and electric mobility. The TVS iQube electric scooter represents the company’s effort to participate in the transition towards cleaner urban transportation. Its broader portfolio strategy also reflects the need to serve both traditional internal-combustion customers and consumers exploring electric alternatives.

International expansion has added another dimension. Operating across diverse markets requires products, distribution and customer support that reflect local needs. TVS has strengthened its global presence, serving customers across approximately 80 countries. Its acquisition of British motorcycle brand Norton has also signalled ambitions in the premium international segment.

The latest results demonstrate the benefits of this diversification. During Q1 FY 2026-27, international business sales grew 33% year-on-year to approximately 4.68 lakh units. Overall two-wheeler and three-wheeler sales reached 1.63 million units, a 28% increase compared with the same quarter of the previous financial year.

However, expansion brings its own challenges, including higher technology investment, intense competition, changing regulations and commodity price fluctuations. In its latest quarterly results, TVS Motor reported that rising input costs were partly offset through price adjustments, cost optimisation and scale benefits.

These moves demonstrate a willingness to invest beyond immediate sales opportunities and build capabilities for the next phase of growth.

The company moved from ₹31,776 crore in FY 2023-24 to ₹47,270 crore in FY 2025-26, increasing revenue by approximately 49% over two years. Its FY 2025-26 performance was supported by 24% growth in total two-wheeler and three-wheeler sales, alongside continued expansion in electric mobility and international markets.

The latest quarterly results provide another indication of its momentum. In Q1 FY 2026-27, revenue reached ₹13,896 crore, compared with ₹10,081 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Operating EBITDA increased 41% to ₹1,779 crore, while the operating EBITDA margin improved to 12.8% from 12.5%.

Operating profit before tax for the full FY 2025-26 increased 40% to ₹4,975 crore. These results suggest that TVS Motor’s growth has been accompanied by improvements in operating performance, although future margins will continue to depend on input costs, product mix and competitive conditions.

The figures illustrate how growth across multiple product categories can strengthen a company’s business model rather than leaving it dependent on one segment.

TVS Storytelling 06

Marketing Strategy: Turning Products into Aspirations

TVS Motor’s brand-building approach combines engineering, performance, practical utility and evolving consumer preferences. The Apache range connects with riding enthusiasts through its motorsport associations, while Jupiter targets consumers prioritising everyday convenience. The iQube strengthens the brand’s position in electric mobility.

This segmented approach allows TVS to speak to different audiences without losing its broader identity. Product launches and design updates help maintain consumer interest, while distribution and service networks support the ownership experience after purchase.

The company’s marketing strategy also benefits from its ability to connect products with specific lifestyles. Performance motorcycles appeal to enthusiasts who value riding dynamics and styling. Family-oriented scooters address daily commuting needs, while electric models target consumers exploring alternatives to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

International expansion and the Norton brand provide additional avenues to build awareness among premium motorcycle buyers. At the same time, TVS continues to operate in price-sensitive markets where reliability, maintenance costs and fuel efficiency remain important purchasing considerations.

The company also benefits from the wider reputation of the TVS Group, whose legacy of customer relationships provides a foundation for trust. In a competitive automotive market, this combination of product differentiation and service reliability can be as important as advertising visibility.

TVS Storytelling 07

A Global Brand with an Evolving Purpose

TVS Motor’s impact increasingly extends beyond Indian roads. Its international presence, premium motorcycle ambitions and investments in electric mobility demonstrate a strategy built around changing transportation needs.

The acquisition and revival of Norton Motorcycles adds an international premium dimension, while continued investment in electric scooters reflects the shift towards more sustainable urban transport. Its manufacturing and distribution capabilities also help the company serve markets with different mobility requirements.

The first quarter of FY 2026-27 reinforced the importance of this global strategy. International business sales grew 33% year-on-year, while electric two-wheeler sales rose 86%. These developments indicate that overseas demand and electric mobility are becoming increasingly relevant to the company’s growth profile.

At the same time, sustained performance will require continued investment in product development, technology, manufacturing capacity and customer service. EV adoption, infrastructure availability, competitive pricing and international market conditions will influence how quickly these investments translate into long-term returns.

The company’s long-term success will depend on how effectively it converts these investments into customer adoption, profitability and enduring brand preference.

TVS Storytelling 08

Conclusion: Growth Built on Trust and Transformation

TVS Motor Company’s journey shows that a lasting brand is built through more than product launches or advertising campaigns. It requires an understanding of everyday customer needs, the willingness to adapt and the discipline to turn innovation into commercial results.

From its manufacturing beginnings in 1978 to record revenue of ₹47,270 crore in FY 2025-26, TVS has evolved alongside India’s changing mobility landscape. Its Q1 FY 2026-27 results, including 38% revenue growth and an 86% increase in electric two-wheeler sales, highlight how the company is positioning itself for the next phase of mobility.

Its motorcycles, scooters and electric vehicles serve different aspirations, yet share a common purpose: helping people move forward.

For business leaders, the central lesson of the TVS Motor brand story is clear. Sustainable growth comes from protecting the trust that built the business while continually rethinking what customers will need next.
